As challenging as the work can be, Shea says it was met with acceptance. One of the youth offenders Shea had written as a character in the play found it a unique form of feedback. “They don’t see themselves within the world,” says Shea. His play was a mirror in which they could see their own behaviour and the effects it had on those around them. “To put the story down on paper, to go yes, these aren’t your names but this is some of the journey that we’ve gone on, for them to get a sense of that was really eye-opening for them. Really powerful.”
